Faith

Faith: Revelation, action and Knowledge

From the Biblical text and a spirited understanding of faith, the subject has three interconnecting layers. One layer is blind trust in the absence of evidence, but perhaps from inner sensing. The other, an intelligent conviction of the mind based on evidence, the third layer is really a manifestation of one or both of the first two layers: action. In practice people’s faith varies considerably and most often will be a mixture of the two. One might be highly educated (like Moses, and the Apostle Paul for example) and have a Burning Bush / Damascus experience’ (direct personal encounter with God). Another person may be uneducated and have faith again through experience of the Holy Spirit, and through their life then grow to have their understanding underpinned with understanding. Below are some useful points of reference concerning these three areas, with suggestions in brackets of what area this scripture might be focusing on:

1. Ephesians 2:8 (revelation)

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God."

2. James 2:17 (action)

"So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."

3. First Thessalonians 1:2-3 (revelation and knowledge)

"We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."

4. Hebrews 11:6 (revelation and knowledge)

"And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him."

5. Romans 10:17 (knowledge)

"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."

6. Hebrews 11:2 (knowledge)

"By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible"
