Wisdom

Solomon Prays for Wisdom

Wisdom is probably the most important self orientated prayer we can ask for. God explains to Solomon that because he has asked for wisdom he can have everything else as well! In effect this is a reinforcement that wisdom is important and the foundation for proper use of possessions and gifts.

In that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said to God, “You have shown great and steadfast love to David my father, and have made me king in his place. Lord God, let your word to David my father be now fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people, for who can govern this people of yours, which is so great?” God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king, wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.” So Solomon came from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem. And he reigned over Israel.

Proverbs 8 Interpretation: Christ?

Hermeneutic issues occur when people make an assumption that ‘wisdom' is a metaphor for Christ, at the act of creation, for example. The broader context for the passage really does not stand up to that reading. Proverbs personifies ‘Wisdom’ as feminine (as in ‘beautiful') to convey it as a focus of holy desire. The context of the passage is that the wisdom of God is something that is living, powerful and calling for a connection with mankind as aid, it is rooted in the fear of God and flourishes from that foundation in to live for the receiver. Wisdom is something ‘living' to be sought as vital as air and water. The end of the passage identifies wisdom as a kind of 'matrix foundation' created for everything to live upon and out from.

In Hebrew 'wisdom’ as a simple meaning is of expertise and the true and genuine use of skill to make things happen. Hebrew has different words to convey intelligence, so even a person who is uneducated (in the academic sense) can have wisdom. This type of wisdom produces fruit of the hands. The six days of creation Genesis account is tangible evidence of this type of wisdom described in Proverbs. Personification methodology for tress is similarly used in Judges 9:7-15 to help convey dynamic information of this kind.
