Born of the Spirit

Jesus once said to a leading Jewish scholar Nicodemus (John 3:1-21), that he must be 'born again' in order to see the Kingdom of Heaven (In the Hebrew it actually means the wind of the Spirit of God). The scholar was confused, yet he was one of the religious elite. This was because he could only see with his physical mind and thinking that Jesus meant that he had to find his mother again and be reborn. The Bible communicates to us that we must be alive in our spirit to see eternal things. We do this by being born again (inviting the Spirit of God into our hearts, to initiate a rebirth of the heart). Below is a simple prayer (example) that can initiate a process of becoming born again; in the spiritual dimension.

Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner (a person who falls short or goes against divine law), and I ask for your forgiveness this day - please forgive me! I believe you died as a sacrifice for my sins and rose from the dead. I believe that you are God incarnate. I turn from my sins now and invite you to come into my heart and life through the power of the Holy Spirit. I want to trust and follow you as my Lord and Saviour and learn to be receptive to the Holy Spirit. I ask this in Jesus name.

Said in front of witnesses who agree by saying “amen” (which means we / I agree!).

The above prayer is an example of how one who wants to know Christ might invite the Spirit of God in to their heart and start a process called being born again of the Spirit, as described in the scriptures. Evidence for being born-again will be new insight into many things, increased wisdom, compelling dreams and visions and a desire to pray and love people in deeper and more meaningful levels.

The Lord’s prayer (on the right column) is a prayer guide from Jesus himself, and the apostles creed is a crystallisation of the major agreed themes of the Bible in a few words. These must form the basis of a new believers understanding to get the foundations right, before they proceed to deeper studies. If you don’t understand these get an experienced Christian friend to help explain what they mean before you decide to become a Christian.

After this you should be thinking about baptism as the Bible encourages (Mark 6:16, Acts 2:38). This is an outward expression of an inner commitment in front of a group of witnesses. Many believers claim that baptism also forms a spiritually legal and powerful action that creates breakthrough in peoples lives.
