Reprobate Mind

We see from Paul’s teaching in the New Testament that a reprobate mind is of someone who has rejected all truth, disclosure, knowledge and inspiration from God. It is a person who has reached a point of blockage in understanding the things of the Spirit of God because of their rejection of truth. In the book of Romans the apostle Paul says there is truth available to all by the reality of creation’s existence alone. In short, the fact of existence proves the existence of God, that He is omnipotent, wise and loving.

The historical accounts in the Bible show us that in terms of man’s relationship with God; mankind strives to reduce, categorise, control and in some cases even worship the things he sees: to worship the created (and man-controllable) rather than the Creator. The examples given in the Bible concern people groups, individuals and kingdoms. The text illustrates many accounts of breakdown in culture and society. These accounts begin with idolatry, then heterosexual acts of evil and immorality, and finally acts of homosexual immorality.

The Bible teaches us that this is the point that God gives them up to what is called a 'reprobate mind’. Importantly this is a result of their own actions of rejecting truth not God’s predestination. This is a tragic situation in which someone with a reprobate mind ceases to have a capacity to understand spiritual truth. In extreme cases the Bible also shows examples of whole cities that have reached this point (Sodom and Gomorrah). The extreme cases shown in the Bible describe places where human lust had become so insatiable that humans were engaging in ritual abuse, male and female rape, sex with animals and sexual murder. In the Bible we see a pattern of God intervening at this (moral point of no return) by sending calamity using plague, war, captivity or supernatural destruction.
